Lindsay Bayuk, CMO at Fullstory  – on the Customerland podcast

In the rush to make sense of customer behavior, most companies are swimming in data – but few are actually learning from it.

Lindsay Bayuk, Chief Marketing Officer at Fullstory, puts it plainly: behavioral data is “the new gold.” Why? Because it doesn’t just tell you what your customers are doing – it gives you clues into why.

Traditional analytics give you numbers: bounce rates, clicks, conversion rates. Useful, yes – but shallow. Behavioral data, by contrast, surfaces emotional cues: frustration, confusion, engagement. Think “rage clicks” (five rapid clicks in ten seconds), erratic cursor movement, or error-clicking during checkout. These signals point to friction – and opportunity.

When AI meets this kind of behavioral intelligence, the result is a dual impact: sharper customer insight and better operational performance. According to Fullstory’s 2025 Reality Check report, companies with deep AI integration see 2x the impact on both engagement and efficiency compared to cautious adopters. As Bayuk puts it, “AI won’t wait for scaredy cats.”

But adoption isn’t always smooth. Common barriers include skill gaps (16%), integration issues (13%), and data quality concerns (14%). Many teams still quarantine AI to low-stakes use cases, or insist on human oversight before making any move. The caution is understandable – but in a landscape where 80% of customers say they’re more likely to return to brands delivering standout digital experiences, hesitating may cost more than acting.

And here’s the bigger issue: while 80% of companies collect data, only 25% say they use it effectively. The rest? Stuck doing “data housework” – cleaning, stitching, reconciling. Bayuk emphasizes the need to break down internal silos and build a culture of data literacy, so insights flow across departments, not just into dashboards.

The most exciting frontier is personalization. Not the stale kind that plugs your name into a subject line – but real-time, behavior-driven personalization. Imagine this: a user thrashes their cursor in frustration during checkout. Instead of logging the moment, your system offers them a live, targeted discount – because it knows they’re about to abandon cart. That’s not automation. That’s emotional intelligence at scale.

For teams overwhelmed by the pace of change, Bayuk offers a practical mantra: don’t boil the ocean. Pick one or two high-leverage areas where AI and behavioral data can drive meaningful results. Test. Iterate. Fail fast if needed. What matters is progress over perfection – and bringing your teams along for the ride.

As AI reshapes the customer landscape, two principles endure:

  1. Solve real customer problems.
  2. Use AI to elevate human decision-making – not replace it.

Companies that get this balance right aren’t just building better CX. They’re building long-term competitive advantage.
